showing some earth day love!

EtsyVeg is hosting “Earth Day ExtraVEGanza” later this week to raise funds for the earth lovin' organization, EarthSave! From Earth Day on Thursday, April 22nd through Saturday, April 24th, participating EtsyVeg member shops will donate 15% of all sales to Earth Save, and my shop is taking part!

Earth Save is an amazing organization that leads a global movement to promote healthy and life-sustaining food choices that make a more positive impact on environmental and human health. They raise awareness of the ecological destruction linked to the production of "food animals" while advocating and promoting a delicious, planet-friendly diet. Help Earth and the environment this weekend, donating to this important cause simply by indulging in a shopping spree with EtsyVeg's veg artisans and their unique handmade and vintage goods!

Tune in on Earth Day for a complete list of participating artisan shops!

can a meat eating animal lover even exist?!

my aunt melanie has a "funny" farm in callicoon, ny (which is super close to woodstock and their fabulous woodstock animal sanctuary)- and she absolutely LOVES animals so it's a little surprising to me that she's not vegan. when i saw her yesterday, i asked her why she wasn't and she said it was because she wasn't raised to be vegan and wouldn't even know where to begin. she told me she could possibly become a vegetarian but still doesn't know how to do such a thing. i almost wished i lived closer to her so that i could help her understand and make her some tasty food-on her farm, she has everything from goats to pigs to an abundance to chihuahua's- her newest addition are two turkeys which she rescued from a turkey farm...when she told me that she rescued them, my ears perked up. obviously she has taken in so many animals from people who surrender them to ones she has adopted and others which she has purchased. so i was curious to find out how she came about these turkeys.
she said she went to the turkey farm and bought the turkeys for her farm...not to eat, but to live out long, healthy lives. she was telling me that the place she got them from were jam packed with 20+ lb turkeys...all marked for murder...poor souls. and even after she "adopted" these turkeys, i still don't think she understands what really happens to the rest of them...

so my question to you is: can a meat eating animal lover even exist? i mean, my aunt doesn't eat any of the animals she brings to her farm...she does ride the horses and eat the eggs that the chickens lay...but she would NEVER consume them...soooo how does she eat pork when she keeps 3 pigs as her pets- which sit for food, by the way?! and how hasn't it ever occurred to her to take a second to think about what she is actually eating?

it's a mystery to me...but my goal is to try to teach her a little bit more about where her food is coming from and how most of these factory farms really treat their animals...i think she is under the impression that all of the animals on these so called farms are treated with love until their death...but someone has to open her eyes...so since i love her, i'll try to make that person me... :)

adding some color to a cold, depressing day...

something to think about...(to my non-vegan friends)

Isn't man an amazing animal? He kills wildlife - birds, kangaroos, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice, foxes and dingoes - by the million in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic animals by the billion and eats them. This in turn kills man by the millions, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative - and fatal - health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer. So then man tortures and kills millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of man, who kills so easily and so violently, and once a year, sends out cards praying for Peace on Earth.

Those of you who are regular readers will remember the three bulls who we saved from slaughter a few months back. The boys were headed for a terrible demise - except, of course, that they were under the watchful eye of friend and team mate Jodi. With the help of many friends Jodi managed to collect the funds necessary to rescue the animals, and has been sheltering them on her land ever since.

But oh life, it is full of surprises. Jodi and her partner, proprietors of This is It! Creations, have recently learned that they must move by the end of May. On top of all of the normal woes a couple faces upon moving, they also have the care of the bulls to consider.

But it seems that where a heart is willing, an answer will appear sooner or later.Hooves and Paws Animal Rescue in California has agreed to take in the bulls! However, there are issues of transportation to consider, and the rescue also needs funds for a permanent shelter for the animals.

So once again, the fundraising is on! Drop by the ChipIn site and remember, everything helps. As Jodi says, "Fingers crossed that we'll raise enough to get these 3 to a wonderful forever home... I am forever grateful to you all. Because of you, we saved 3 lives - and I know we can get them to a great home where they can live out their lives in peace." And she's offering a Spotty Friend note pad to anyone who donates $25 or more through the site. Win win? I think so.

who's your vegan role model?

i have many...but paul mccartney is definitely one of my favorites...

vegan poem for baby :)

i found the poem below on http://www.thekindlife.com/ and it brought tears to my eyes...please read it!!!

Letter to Ciera

I found this poem as I was looking around on the Kind Life forums. It's a poem written from a vegan mommy to her baby daughter, and I thought it was so touching, funny, and just plain beautiful.

Letter To Ciera by Heather Leughmyer

You’ll never watch an elephant standing on her head

You will see amazing acrobats and painted clowns instead.

You’ll never color Easter eggs or eat a “Happy” Meal

Instead you’ll give pigs belly rubs – You’ll know chickens dream and feel.

The clamor from the ice cream truck won’t be music to your ears

You will know your Soy Delicious caused no suffering or tears.

You may hear a gentle gobble as you softly stroke a turkey

And give thanks that she’s alive as you’re eating your Tofurky.

While other kids buy leather shoes and eat at Chuck E. Cheese

You’ll be kissing cows and feeding goats and saying “soy please!”

Being different can be hard I know - This world is often cruel

Maybe you’ll be laughed at by the other kids at school.

But compassion is a vital gift that too few share with others

And your heart will not be filled with guilt the way it plagues your mother’s.

So don’t ever be embarrassed or ashamed because you care

You’ll be uniquely beautiful with an empathy that’s rare.

And when you see a rescued lamb and touch his thick warm fleece

You’ll feel no sadness or remorse – You can look at him in peace.

What took so long for me to learn, I’ll start teaching you from birth

And your footprint will be much tinier on this fragile earth.
